AACR2 AND METADATA  - An ALCTS Institute, Thursday-Friday, August 16-17,
2001 in Boston, Massachusetts

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (a division
of the American Library Association) invites you to participate in the
"AACR2 and Metadata" Institute, Thursday-Friday, August 16-17, 2001 in
Boston -- a great way to kick off the 2001 International Federation of
Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Council and General
Conference.

This is one of the most important Institutes for your professional
development in the 21st Century!  Please sign up immediately!

The two-day event will offer a wealth of opportunities to hone practical
cataloging know how and investigate solutions to integrating resources,
seriality and other tangled issues in the online and printed environments
-- of especial interest to those who face cataloging, collecting, Web
interface design, or otherwise in the constantly evolving electronic
environment.

Find out the most effective and most efficient options for providing your
users with access to print and Web resources.  The first day will be
devoted to a thorough examination of traditional cataloging practices and
upcoming changes for monographs and serials, the second day to exploration
of a variety of issues related to metadata.  Here are a few of the areas
to be covered:

*       AACR2, Dublin Core, ISSN, MARC 21, RDF, W3C, XML, and approaches
to handling metadata
*       Review of existing cataloging standards (e.g., AACR2, CONSER
Guidelines, Hallam's Loose-leaf Cataloging, latest proposals and decisions from JSCAACR, CC:DA and MARBI, etc.)
*       Discussion on the future of cataloging in the electronic age and
the development of new rules, guidelines, and standards for electronic and integrating resources (e.g., databases, loose-leaf, Web sites, etc.)

The Boston Institute registration fee is $325 for ALCTS and New England
Library Association members; $375 for ALA and IFLA members; $425 for
non-members.

with an outstanding faculty and excellent subject matter the regional
Institute is a MUST attend for today's librarians.

These Institutes are co-sponsored by the ALCTS SS, Committee to Study
Serials Cataloging (CSSC), ALCTS CCS Cataloging Committee: Description and Access (CC:DA) and the ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Committee (NRMC).   A second Institute is scheduled for November 2001 in Dallas, Texas and a third in the spring of 2002 in San Diego, California.
