I won't dissent, because the term Artificial Intelligence hinges
on too many notions that are undefined. From your comments I gather
that you believe intelligence must include the ability to make
choices that couldn't be predicted by the programmer. To the extent
that you describe behavior that seems to be very tightly programmed,
allowing no choice, I suppose you're right. However, I'd like to
point out that even human behavior is deterministic. We are so
complex that, as far as anyone can tell, our behavior is unpredict-
able for all practical purposes, but everything we do depends on the
deterministic interactions of molecules and hardwired nerve paths.
We are just as deterministic as any robot.
Maybe what you're looking for is the idea of complexity. In terms of
details a toy like David is quite complex, but apparently it isn't
complex enough in its execution. It doesn't seem to be able to learn,
for example. (A curious deficit in a toy designed to replace a child:
children are learning machines.)
What were those plush toys called that came out three or four years
ago? They had an infra-red LED and sensor so that they could communi-
cate with other toys like them, and a mic and speaker so they appeared
to be able to learn to talk. In fact, their English vocabulary was pre-
programmed, with an algorithm that allowed more access to the vocabu-
lary as kids played with the toy. That's the sort of thing David seems
to be, only more so.
Incidentally, the grail of real AI is what David is: great complexity
in the details, but complete predictability in the results. Real AI
work is not meant to create unpredictable toys, but to create reliable
automatons that can deal with the complexity of the human world.
