Sometime in the last year or so I read a short story collection of
alternate history. In one of the stories the British have been beaten by
the Germans and General Orde Wingate has retreated to India, where he
surrenders to General Modell. Mahatma Gandhi has been using passive
resistance against the British, doesn't believe the stories about what the
Germans do to capitive populations, and decides to try his methods of
peaceful, non-violent, passive resistance on the Germans.
Can anyone identify the story or the collection? I have a feeling that all
the stories in the book were about WW II, but this could be wrong. I also
have a feeling I have seen the story in two different collections.
I have checked Harry Turtledove's "Alternate Generals" (1998), and it does
not seem to be in there.
(It's possible that it's not a recent collection, since I do read books
from libraries and used book stores in addition to new books.)
