The National Defense University Library is searching for a Lead Cataloger
and team leader to be part of a "state of the art" information service
providing access to resources in all formats. This position is a
challenging one of integrating websites, online documents, audio-visual
materials, electronic journals, books, rare books and personal collections,
and realia into a database providing coherent access to materials supporting
the mission of the University.
Located in George C. Marshall Hall on Ft McNair in Washington DC between the
Anacostia River and the Washington Channel, the NDU Library's location is
ideal. From Technical Services' windows, one can look to the Washington
Monument, the US Capitol and the Library of Congress for inspiration
The library's collections consist of more than 500,000 bound volumes,
periodicals, A-V materials, microforms, government documents, and classified
documents. The library is a readily available source of information on the
theory and conduct of national security affairs, international relations,
management, and mobilization of resources.
The book collection emphasizes history and the social sciences, management,
and military art and science. The Library's Special Collections, Archives,
and History Branch is the repository for personal papers, rare books,
academic history materials, student papers, historical photographs, maps,
prints, and artifacts. The manuscript collection contains the personal
papers of twentieth-century military leaders, with emphasis on those of
former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. - Powell, Shalikashvili,
Shelton, Taylor and other military luminaries The Library has ambitiously
undertaken a digitization project sparked by the library's role as a
repository for the personal paper collections. The digitizing of resources
in Special Collections and the application of metadata to the database
provides a challenging opportunity for catalogers.
The NDU Library is the developer of MERLN (Military Education Research
Library Network) <http://www.merln.ndu.edu>. The NDU Library recognized an
opportunity to develop library service in the arena of international
military education and reached out to through MERLN. MERLN links military
library catalogs; serves as a portal to full-text military journals,
bibliographies and unique digitized collections. It provides access to
ejournals through password authentication of alums. It has served as a
unifying force through library cooperation to countries throughout the
world.
The collection of 1,400 current periodicals is complemented by access to
over 4,000 electronic journals Multidisciplinary online search services are
available to students locally as well as distance learners and alums.
The Library is organized into Automation & Technical Services; Research and
Information Services; and Special Collections, Archives and History; all
work under the guidance of the Library Director.
Technical Services is responsible for the value-added function of
descriptive cataloging which assures accessibility of the library's
collections. Responsibilities: Leads the Technical Services team in
providing superior service for the acquisition of, access to and control of
resources using a variety of methods. Provides goal and priority-setting,
policy and procedure formulation; monitoring and revision of work flows;
planning and monitoring production and use of resources. Shares in all
aspects of management and planning within the department. Assists in
in-house training activities, in the development of staff work plans, and in
the annual performance appraisal process for support staff positions.
