Forwarded for Windy Lundy:
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has defined and approved
core
standards for many of the bibliographic formats, beginning with the
standard
for books in the mid-1990's. All the core standards are intended to
encourage "faster, better, cheaper" cataloging, with the same
reliability in
description, authorized headings, and call numbers as full-level
records,
but they require fewer notes and subject headings. In 1999, the PCC
approved the core bibliographic standard for rare books (based on the
full
standard of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books and, therefore,
called DCRB
core) for use in cataloging books with imprint dates between 1500 and
1800.
Like the other core standards, the DCRB core record sits between the
minimal-level record and the full record. Traditionally, rare book
catalogers have sought to provide the fullest description with as
many
points of access as appropriate, but they have accepted and approved
the
DCRB core standard. Is the DCRB core standard being used?
I am beginning a project to determine whether the standard is being
used;
why or why not; and if it is being used, under what circumstances it
is
being applied. This message bears some preliminary questions about
the use
of the DCRB core record which, although a PCC standard, may be
applied by
any library, whether a BIBCO participant or not:
1. Are you using the DCRB core standard for cataloging your rare
books?
2. If you are not using the standard, is it because you have made a
decision not to use it?
3. If either is the case, would you or someone at your institution
be
willing to answer a questionnaire about your use and perception of
the DCRB
core standard?
This message is being posted to AUTOCAT, EXLIBRIS, and PCCLIST to
reach a
broad range of possible users of the DCRB core record.
Please respond to me privately at [log in to unmask] rather
than to
the entire list.
With many thanks,
Windy Lundy
