Subject: Native American Titles in Process
In fiscal year 2001, NLS added thirty-five titles to its
Native American collection. These books, most of which are
still in process, cover folklore, history, mythology,
fiction, and works by Native American authors. All books
will be available in the format noted and will be announced
in __Braille Book Review or Talking Book Topics.__The titles
in braille will also be available in electronic format in
Web-Braille. A book number is given if it has been
assigned. Annotations are available for four books in each
category (juvenile and adult).
__Juvenile books
Girod, Christina M. __Native Americans of the Southeast__.
RC 52384. For grades 6-9. Discusses the history, social
customs, religion, and forced removal of Indians of the
southeastern United States. Examines the Calusa, Catawba,
Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Natchez, Seminole, and
Timucua tribes. 2001.
Hill, Kirkpatrick. __The Year of Miss Agnes.__ RC 51865.
For grades 3-6. A story about a special teacher who makes
learning interesting for the children of an Alaskan village
in 1948. She also teaches sign language to a deaf student
and her classmates. It is told from the perspective of a
ten-year old Athapascan girl, the deaf student's sister.

Jones, Veda Boyd. __Native Americans of the Northwest
Coast.__RC 52402. For grades 6-9. Discusses the history,
culture, religion, conflicts, and modern efforts to preserve
the traditions of the seven tribes that populate the
northwest coast of the United States. Tribes included are
the Bella Coola, Coast Salish, Haida, Kwakiutl, Nootka,
Tlingit, and Tsimshian.

the efforts of the Makah Indians of Washington state to
reestablish their tribal whaling tradition. The author
describes the preparations and details of a whale-hunting

Tong, Benson. __Susan La Flesche Picotte, M.D.: Omaha Indian
Leader and Reformer.__ RC. Discusses the life of Susan La
Flesche Picotte, born in 1865 and graduated from medical
college in 1889, who was the first Native American woman
doctor. Describes how she combined her heritage of herbal
healing with the practice of Western medicine and became a
promoter of social causes and a physician for the Bureau of
Indian Affairs. 1999.
