I think the confusion has arisen from SOAP adoptions of XML schema (or a
subset of it) for giving a language neutral description of the API - in
effect duplicating IDL for CORBA. Re-using XML schema in this way is
clever, but you have to be careful to differentiate from using XML
schema as an interface definition language and XML schema as a
definition of an XML document...
