Information on applying for the Reference-Bibliographer for Engineering position will be posted on the Naval Academy Library's web site http://www.usna.edu/Library/ in the next few days. See below for details on the position.

                           Reference-Bibliographer for Engineering

                                                The Nimitz Library
                                             U.S. Naval Academy

The Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy, seeks a dynamic librarian with experience, energy, initiative, and enthusiasm to serve as its reference-bibliographer for engineering.

As reference-bibliographer for engineering, the librarian will serve as the liaison to the Naval Academy's several engineering departments and programs, and will be an active participant in instruction, reference, collection development and faculty collaboration. He or she will also work closely with other USNA librarians to develop innovative services and programs for this academic community. The possibility also exists for assignment to an additional academic area.

Specific responsibilities will be to:
-- provide the point of contact between the Library and faculty in the engineering departments in order to ensure library support of academic information needs for faculty and midshipmen;
-- provide both upper-division and lower-division instruction to midshipmen in support of academic assignments in collaboration with faculty;
-- provide reference/research assistance to midshipmen, faculty and other authorized library users;
-- serve on the Reference Desk which may include evening and/or weekend hours in support of the Library's schedule;
-- build and maintain collections in the area of engineering; and
-- report to the Head of Reference.

The strongest candidates will be self-motivated, flexible team players, comfortable with change while also appreciative of the importance of continuities.

The Naval Academy is the Navy's undergraduate college, with 4,150 students, more than 500 civilian and military faculty, and 18 major fields of study in three academic divisions (seven in Engineering, seven in Math & Science, and four in Humanities/Social Sciences). The Academy has produced five Rhodes Scholars in the last ten years alone.

The Academy's Engineering Division has approximately 150 faculty and five departments (Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Naval Architecture/Ocean, and Systems). Approximately 40% of the Academy's graduating seniors are engineering majors. The engineering programs are ABET-accredited.

The Nimitz Library has a user-oriented staff of 41 FTE (including 18 professional librarians) and some 550,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals, plus government documents, microforms, extensive holdings in Special Collections and Archives, and a growing array of electronic resources. "Library Excellence" is one of the initiatives in the Naval Academy's Strategic Plan, and the Library has been receiving significant budgetary increases for acquisitions. For additional information about the Library, see http://www.usna.edu/Library.

Located in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland and "the sailing capital of America", the Naval Academy is 30 miles from both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Area.

Beginning salary will be at least the first step ($46,469) of the GS-11 pay scale, higher depending on experience or other qualifications.

Questions about the position, about the Nimitz Library, or about navigating the application process should be directed to:
