What 2nd indicator value should we use when we are supplying an 053 field for
literary authors in new NARs? The MARC21 Authority Format gives two valid
codes: 0 (=Assigned by LC), or 4 (Assigned by agency other than LC; The MARC
code for the organization is contained in subfield $5). When we use the
Library of Congress Literary Author (053) Request Form at the NACO website to
suggest a classification, there is no mention of indicator values.
We note that RLIN accepts the value of blank in 2nd indicator position of 053
and there are many records in LCNA with this value. Should we always use 2nd
indicator code 0 (zero) when LC approves our proposed classification? Why is
2nd indicator value of blank apparently valid? When should we leave the 2nd
indicator blank, or should we?
