May I point to the fact (yes, fact!) that in Germany as in other European
countries, we have been using the non-sort markers method ever since
we began with library data processing. That's about 36 years. We have not
experienced any of the problems Geoff listed in his posting. If you really really
intend to use standard software to process catalog data in any way, it is no
difficult matter at all to strip the control characters out.
Besides, Geoff's suggestion of a new $0 would not permit marking interior
parts of titles for non-sorting. Something we do find useful.
MARBI, please finalize the discussion paper 2002-05
http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2002/2002-dp05.html
We are waiting for it. Or there will not be a D-MARC.
Sorry to say, but we have an uneasy feeling that anything invented outside
MARCland borders is flatly ignored and experience gathered and documented
elsewhere counts for nothing. I would never write this had I not lost count by
now of how often this particular issue has been brought up. With the non-sort
markers, it becomes a non-issue. The sore spot that many titles in a 700 $t, for
example, have been robbed of their articles just because the markers had not been
invented, however, cannot be remedied...
