April 23rd we received our MARC21 October 2001 replacement pages from
Canadian Government Publishing. The pages in the second half
(Replacement Pages of Parts of a Data Element or Field) had already been
replaced by pages in the first half (Replacement Pages for Sections or
Fields Issued in their Entirety). I checked page by page.
I'm told that the same thing happened to those who received updates from
the U.S. source.
We ordered three copies for CAN$272.04. Only one copy of the updates
can replace pages for *two* copies of the format, since the two
parts duplicate each other. We are returning one copy with payment for
two, and the Replacement Pages for Parts of a Data Element or Field from
the second copy is hereby offered to any library which would like to
purchase them for half price OBO and return the copy they ordered.
Several of the changes are upsetting, but at top of the list is the
(anti spirit of AACR2) CONSER omission of date if first or last issue is
not in hand. The MARC21 260 lacking date ends in a period however, as
opposed to CONSER's comma. Second on the list of departure from
principle is the addition of "or another bibliographic record" to the
meaning of controlled in 740, allowing the use of 730 for titles for
which there is no authority 130. *How* controlled by another
bibliographic record? In 130? 245? 246? 505$t? 7XX$t? I'm going to
limit this to serials with title main entry myself.
