I would be interested in learning how METS implementers are currently
planning to use the TYPE attribute on the <mets> element. Are people
thinking in terms of trying to align this attribute with the MARC leader 6
values (or the associated MODS <resourceType> element enumerations); or
more to capture genre (along the lines of the MODS <genre> element). The
METS documentation suggests a more genre-like use is probably intended.
As best practice discussions heat up, I assume there will be some
discussion of vocabulary control for this attribute so that TYPE values can
be meaningful both within and across institutional boundaries.
