HEADLINE: Scramjet rocket launched in Australia
DATELINE: CANBERRA, July 30
BODY:
A scramjet rocket was launched Tuesday, the Australian Associated Press
reported. The report quoted scientists as saying that the research will
potentially allow airliners to fly at more than eight times the speed of
sound and is likely to revolutionize the launch of small space payloads,
such as communications satellites, by substantially lowering costs as the
oxygen-breathing capabilities mean the engines do not need to carry most of
their own propellant.
The allegedly world-first rocket was launched by researchers from the
University of Queensland at Woomera, South Australia. The researchers, who
are receiving data from the rocket, are not yet able to say whether the
experiment had been a success, the report said.
