In the course of the NAHSTE project at the University of Edinburgh
we have been successfully using XMetal 2, with project specific
macros and templates.
One useful feature of it is the ability to 'zip up' parts within the
working document. This prevents lengthier ones from significantly
slowing things down and aids navigation within the document.
