Working with a basic shell built on a paper finding aid, the James
Madison Carpenter project team developed a series of XMetaL macros
that facilitated data entry. These include some rudimentary data
validation as well. Using these a team of folklorists, some of whom
are not computer-oriented, were able to catalog about 12,000 items
in some detail in a 9 month span. Macros have been written to both
create new entries and to edit existing ones all using a fill-in-the-blank
sort of interface.
