Folks -

I hope you will indulge me posting a new position announcement to this list.
As is the case with most of you, we are in the process of building our
digital library infrastructure, including how exactly to use METS. An
important part of developing our DL infrastructure will be the hiring of a
full-time Metadata Librarian. If anyone on this list is interested, or knows
of anyone who yearns to become a part of this trail-blazing experience,
please consider our position. Our library environment is very empowered and
collegial, with abundant opportunity to make an impact, develop your own
style, and work with colleagues who are very excited about our DL future.

The Metadata Librarian provides leadership for the University of Tennessee
Libraries on all metadata issues, coordinates with constituencies inside and
outside the libraries on these issues, is the resident authority for
metadata standards, and helps establish and enforce metadata policies for
the libraries. The Metadata Librarian reports to the Head of Technical
Services and Digital Access and is a member of the Cataloging Unit of that
department. The librarian is a member of the Digital Library Center's
Steering Committee, which selects the digital projects with which the
libraries are involved, and works closely with the Steering Committee and
the Digital Initiatives Librarian (based in the Systems office) in the
completion of chosen projects.

Environment: The University of Tennessee is a Carnegie Research Level One
institution and enrolls approximately 26,000 students from the United States
and over 100 other countries. UT is one of 27 higher education institutions
holding the distinction of being both a land-grant institution and state
university. The UT Libraries, with an annual budget exceeding $12 million,
holds 2 million volumes and receives approximately 10,000 current serials.
The Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches
on the Knoxville campus. Over three hundred persons are employed, including
49 librarians.

Job Description: Metadata - Maintain knowledge of national metadata
standards and schema and be responsible for interpreting and adapting those
metadata schema for local purposes. Select the appropriate metadata scheme
for each project. Coordinate the creation and management of, and training
in, descriptive and other metadata for the selected projects. Work closely
with the Library Systems Department in the production of administrative
metadata and storage of digital objects. Assist in the selection, creation,
and maintenance of a library portal. Production - Oversees the process of
digitization of various types of materials (including, but not limited to,
print, slides, photographs, maps, scores, music). Responsibility for
evaluating digital projects for outsourcing or in house production.
Responsibility for directing any outsourced project(s). Supervision (hiring,
evaluation, training) of student workers and the equivalent of one FTE staff
member in digitization projects. Work with the Department Head to integrate
production of metadata into the balance of the Technical Services
Department, including responsibility for training staff members in the
production of metadata. Other - Participate with grant submissions for
additional projects. Assist as needed in the production of MARC records for
the library catalog. Participate in the evaluation, selection, and
implementation of, and training in, a new integrated library system.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA accredited program.
Demonstrated familiarity and experience with integrated library systems and
metadata schema such as MARC, TEI, EAD, DC or OAI. Knowledge of current
cataloging rules and standards. Excellent oral and written communication
skills. Ability to work collaboratively with several different
constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications: Academic library experience and experience in
training are strongly preferred. Familiarity with related XML technology
such as XSL or XLINK and/or administrative metadata solutions such as METS
is preferred. Familiarity with relational database structure is also
preferred.

Salary and Benefits: Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor
with minimum salary of $40,000. Faculty rank and status; twelve-month,
tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet University requirements
for promotion and tenure. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days;
choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable
contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group health
and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all university
employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent
children and spouses of UT employees.
