Training the NACO Trainer course being offered

A course entitled "Training the NACO Trainer" will be presented by the
Cooperative Cataloging Team at the Library of Congress on Tuesday,
October 15, 2002. The course is being offered to LC catalogers and
catalogers from current Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) libraries with
the goals of:
1. training catalogers from PCC institutions, including LC, to function
as NACO trainers, reviewers, and liaisons for libraries in the NACO
program
2. expanding the pool of Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC)
trainers, reviewers, and liaisons
3. sharing the expertise of participating catalogers with the larger
library community
The course will focus on the role of NACO within the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging; the use of training and cataloging documentation
in NACO training; effective instructional techniques for diverse
training situations; and the administrative aspects of NACO training and
authority record contribution. Documentation used in the course
includes, but is not limited to: AACR and LCRIs for Chapters 22-26; MARC
21 Authority Format; the NACO Participants' Manual; the NACO Trainee
Manual; and the NACO Trainers' Manual; and materials from the PCC web
site.
The class will accommodate approximately 10 participants. Invitations
to this class have been issued to catalogers at current participating
NACO libraries.
Objectives:
At the end of the course, the NACO trainer-liaison will be able to:
1. Train catalogers to create and revise name authority records for
contribution to the national authority file.
2. Explain the purpose and history of NACO training, the role of
participants, and the philosophy of NACO and the PCC.
3. Negotiate arrangements for the training session.
4. Instruct participants on LC's administrative requirements for NACO
work.
5. Recognize the attributes of the effective instructor.
6. Apply effective delivery methods and training techniques for diverse
training situations.
7. Facilitate presentation of training sessions through an
understanding of adult learning theory and training skills.
8. Use NACO training documentation in training.
9. Train participants to apply cataloging documentation.
10. Serve as NACO reviewer to help a library reach independence.
Expectations
Upon completion of the class, these NACO trainers will be expected to
interact with at least one new institution per year as NACO trainer,
reviewer, or LC liaison. This responsibility could require travel to
the institution for a five-day training workshop, with travel expenses
covered by the institution receiving the training.
Follow-up work may involve 2-8 hours a week for about six months, and
1-4 hours a week thereafter. Follow-up work includes reviewing the
institutions' authority records and answering questions in order to
realize the achievement of independence in authorities by the NACO
institution. LC catalogers may perform a range of NACO liaison duties
such as answering questions, canceling duplicate records, and performing
bibliographic file maintenance work in the LC ILS, which serves as the
NACO database. NACO trainers and liaisons are expected also to keep
abreast of developments in NACO and the PCC and to maintain contact with
other NACO liaisons in the Cooperative Cataloging Team.

The PCC is not offering funding to cover travel costs of participants.
It is expected that an institution sending a prospective trainer will
cover such costs as an investment in the increased expertise of their
staff member and as a benefit for the larger library community.
