Ron,
I've checked, and yes, the story is "The Jigsaw Man", in Niven's "Tales of
Known Space". According to the Internet Speculative Fiction Database
(http://www.sfsite.com/isfdb/) it is also published in Niven's collection
"All the Myriad Ways", Ellison's "Dangerous Visions" and Gunn's "The Road to
Science Fiction volume 3".
If you need help finding a copy I may be able to help.
Barry.

Ron,
The story you are thinking of is by Larry Niven, but I cannot pin down the
title - it may have been "The Jigsaw Man". Yes, the protagonist is
sentenced to death for speeding. I'll check my library and see if I can
find it.
A number of Niven's stories are set against a background where organ
transplants are commonplace and he is exploring the consequences of this to
society - check out "The Long ARM of Gil Hamilton", "The Patchwork Girl",
and "A Gift from Earth". This last is especially interesting in that it is
set on an interstellar colony world which has a hereditary aristocracy based
on transplant technology ("Crew" live off transplants taken from
"Passengers"). The story is basically about a revolution which occurs when
a technological advance (the Gift of the title) removes the need for
transplants.
Another interesting Niven story is "Achilles' Choice", which looks at
performance enhancement in sport.
Barry.

Hi, All,
A good friend of mine is an English professor at a hearby college. She
will
be taking on an honors seminar this fall and the topic is to be "Health
Issues in L:iterature". She asked me if I had any recommended science
fiction stories/novels that she could consider for inclusion in the readings
for the course.
I immediately thought of Huxley's _Brave New World_, but so had she. I also
recalled a short story in which the protagonist, a jail escapee, destroys an
organ harvest/transplant facility, but is apprehended before he can finish.
This story concludes with a discussion between the former escapee and his
lawyer where we realize that he is to be a candidate as donor for an organ
harvest, himself. The crime for which he is being tried is speeding (or
some
such minor law violation).
I have two requests:
1) Can anyone identify the story I described (seems to me it may have been
a
Larry Niven short, but I just don't recall)?
2) Any other candidates? (Name/author of story/novel and short description
would be greatly appreciated.)
My friend's "drop dead" date for sending in her reading requirements is Oct
1. I'll be delighted to pass on any suggestions.
Thanx, in advance.
Ron Bliss
