This reminds me of something that I forgot to mention in my post. At my first
WorldCon (MidAmeriCon), the first time that I glimpsed any of the SF royalty
was at the Meet the Pros party on Thurs or Fri nite of the con. I got R A
Lafferty and Larry Niven to sign my program book. I also got Niven and
Pournelle to sign some of their collaborations (Mote in Gods Eye, Inferno and
Lucifers Hammer). But the coolest thing was the autograph that was not meant
for me. My college pal George Gimarc had given me his pb of "Time Enough for
Love" to get signed. At the Meet the Authors party I managed to get in to the
frail superauthor and get that one book signed.
George later told me that he had loaned it out as a part of his junior HS
class, and it never got back.
So it goes.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent,
rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
