SRW implemented as part of the ARTISTE project:
ARTISTE is a European Commission supported project that has developed integrated content and metadata-based image retrieval across several major art galleries in Europe. Collaborating galleries include the Louvre in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the National Gallery in London.
Over the last two and a half years, ARTISTE has developed an image search and retrieval system that integrates distributed, heterogeneous image collections. The final system provides access to over 170,000 images and over 5 million items of metadata. Support for SRW has been implemented to provide distributed query access to the various collections. However to enable image content based queries to be made using SRW the draft specifications were extended where necessary (notably the CQL language).
A public version of ARTISTE containing 1000 images from the Victoria and Albert Museum is now available (http://artiste.it-innovation.soton.ac.uk/) and can be queried using the SRW protocol by downloading a dedicated client from http://www.it-innovation.soton.ac.uk/artiste/. This site also provides links to a user guide to accessing ARTISTE using SRW and a report on the implementation of SRW in ARTISTE.
NB The implementation of SRW in ARTISTE was done at a time when the SRW specifications were in draft. The publicly available interface does not therefore conform completely to the v1.0 specification now released. However the SCULPTEUR project is building on work done in ARTISTE and it is one of the aims of the project to update SRW support to v1.0 and to maintain close contact with the ZING. More information on SCULPTEUR can be found here http://www.sculpteurweb.org/.
We would welcome feedback from the ZING.
