The language has been on the table of JAC once before. It was on the list of
possible additions to ISO 639-1, and it was (briefly) discussed in February
2000. It was at that time "deferred", both for alpha-2 and alpha-3
identifier.
The language currently is encoded under the group "roa" (Romance (other)).
Ethnologue lists Aragonese as an individual language (identifier AXX). (See
http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=AXX.)
Linguasphere classifies the language as 51-AAA-db.
There seems to be little doubt that the correct English name is "Aragonese",
French is "aragonais", indigenous is "aragonés".
There also seems to be sufficient evidence of more than 50 documents.
As to identifiers:
Ethnologue identifier is "AXX"; one of the submissions suggest "ARG"; the
original proposal for alpha-2 identifier was "an". All these identifiers are
available. If we should decide that an alpha-2 identifier is called for, it
should be noted that "ar" is taken, but that "ag" is available. The
identifier "ARG" is used by Ethnologue for a different language.
We should at this point try not to add new "conflicts" with Ethnologue
(given the development of "Part 3" of ISO 639). All "sensible" alpha-3
combinations starting with AR, AA, AG, AO, AN, AE, AS are taken in
Ethnologue.
There may not be a need for a lengthy discussion on this item. Unless the
discussion seems to be going high at the time, I would suggest that we plan
to end the discussion on 18 October (two weeks from tomorrow). I have
requested from the submitters any relevant information to evaluate whether
an alpha-2 identifier is called for.
Best regards,
Håvard
