FEDLINK has successfully negotiated a tiered fee structure, based on
number of relevant professionals accessing the data, for member use of
the INSPEC database. The FEDLINK data fee will be prorated among
participating institutions. For institutions with fewer than 100
relevant professional users, this data fee is expected to be
approximately $5,000; for institutions with 1,000 or more relevant
professional users it may approach $50,000. Others will fall someplace
in between. Relevant professional users are defined as those who would
be expected to use the database on a regular basis, specifically
physicists, computer scientists, and electrical and electronic
engineers. Under the terms of this agreement, desktop access can be
offered to the entire organization and need not be limited to those
defined as "relevant professionals."
In addition, FEDLINK has obtained quotes from multiple INSPEC providers
for a fee to cover access to the data through that provider's search
interface, enabling members to integrate INSPEC with other online
services. This access fee will be a percentage of each institution's
data fee. Fees range from 10 % to 40% depending upon the provider
selected. Providers (in alphabetical order) are: Dialog Corporation,
EBSCO Information Services, ISI Web of Science, OCLC FirstSearch, Ovid
Technologies/SilverPlatter, Proquest, Questel-Orbit, Inc., and STN
International/Chemical Abstracts. EI is also being contacted for a
quote. For those who express interest in participating, further details
will be provided.
In most cases, participants will transfer the appropriate amount (data
fee plus access fee) into the account for their vendor of choice. The
FEDLINK 7.75% transfer pay fee will apply to this total.
The more participants we get, the better the price will be. If you are
