Adam,
I can tell you what we told our catalogers who were trained to do
integrating resources here at LC. Basically, since we are supplying a
serial 006 during this interim period in order to bring out the
*integrating* aspects, we asked staff to pay particular attention to the
"seriality" elements and generally not to worry about the "content"
elements since those content elements in a serial 006 are generally
duplicative of what might already be coded in the 008 (e.g., a book 008
when Ldr/06=a), or for many non-book materials, just plain not
applicable. Our goal was to be able to convey the important elements ,
e.g., to distinguish a loose-leaf from an updating Web site or a "true"
serial from an integrating resource, and not to have to say in several
different coded places that it was an encylopedia.
A few caveats-- our system works in such a manner that when an 006
field is added, it includes default values for *every* position that are
chosen here at LC; I add this clarification to assure you that a valid
value will be present in every position (generally a fill character),
and to say that some elements are accurately set by default and thus do
not have to be addressed by the cataloger at all (e.g., Entry convention
006/17 set by default to "2" for integrating entry). Since this will
work differently for other systems, and even at other institutions that
use the same system we do, an instruction to *our* staff should not be
over generalized as applying to other catalogers (i.e., we told our
staff not to address Entry convention because we knew it would be
accurately set by default).
Another caveat is for copy cataloging. We understand that some
institutions may have decided that they *do* have the resources to
address each position in the 006, we will accept and re-distribute those
values when we use such a record for copy cataloging, even if we would
not have supplied them ourselves (presuming, of course, that they are
valid values).
I should note that this practice for the serial 006 in integrating
records parallels long-standing practices related to coding 007 fields
(e.g., for a computer file 007, our general practice for monographs has
been to address positions 00-01 and supply fill characters for positions
03-13), an in both cases these practices are in line with the National
Level Requirements for MARC 21 (see
http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/nlr/).
Hope this answers your question.

Hi folks,
I heard at a workshop last week that when an 006 is added for the
seriality aspects of an integrating resource, that not all the bytes
in
the 006 will be coded, only the four for form of material, frequency,
type
of continuing resource, and entry convention. This was the first I
had
heard that the entire 006 wouldn't be filled out. Is this an
articulated
PCC practice somewhere? LC practice? Is there a national practice
set
for this that I missed?
