Dear PCC Participant:

                                HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

Once again it is that time of year to be grateful for the PCC
Program and prepare for the upcoming events in the new calendar year.
Please read about recent news of the PCC and the Program's look forward
to 2003 and beyond. The latest Program headlines are given in this
message; however, it is suggested to visit the links to get the full
story.

The annual meeting of the PCC Policy Committee (PoCo) was held
in early November 2002. The agenda included a discussion of proposed
changes to be made to the PCC Strategic and Tactical Plan as well as
changes to the PCC Governance document. The PoCo-approved changes to
facilitate the appointment of PCC Standing Committee chairs have been
incorporated in the PCC Governance document
(http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/governce.html). Please plan to attend
the Sunday night PCC Participants' Meeting at ALA Midwinter where the
PCC Tactical and Strategic plans will be highlighted.

The PoCo has chosen Carlen Ruschoff, Director of Technical
Services, University of Maryland Libraries, as the new PCC Chair-Elect.
Ruschoff will take office as Chair in October 2003 at the conclusion of
Robert Wolven's term.

Beginning in FY03 the PCC Statistics will feature a new monthly
cumulations by all participating libraries in the NACO, BIBCO, and
CONSER programs (cf. http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/stats/stats.html).
This statistical effort is being undertaken to provide a yardstick that
institutions can use in comparing year-to-date totals with those totals
that were submitted as goals. It is hoped that this cumulation will
serve as a reminder to participating institutions of the commitment they
have to the PCC Program goals as outlined in the Strategic and Tactical
plans.

Included in the Frequently Asked Questions document on creating
Name Authority Records (NARs) for NACO
(http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/nacocatfaq.html) are now
questions and answers about undifferentiated personal name headings (see
questions 27 and 28). A new draft FAQ for corporate names has been
created and is available at
(http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/corpfaq.html). Please review and
send any suggestions or comments on this new draft FAQ directly to Ana
Cristan ([log in to unmask]).

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) will host two
workshops at ALA Midwinter Conference on Friday, January 24, 2003, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in support of SACO, the Subject Authority
Cooperative Program of the PCC. Participants are required to
pre-register no later than January 6, 2003. The workshops are open at no
charge on a first-come, first-served basis to all catalogers/librarians
interested in proposing new subject headings and changes to existing
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Training materials will be
provided free of charge at the workshop. PCC programs will comply with
the Americans with Disabilities Act.
For a full description of the SACO workshops and a link to the
registration forms, go to the SACO Home Page and open up your browser
to: (http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/sacowkshop03m.html).
The location for both workshops is the LOEWS Hotel, Lescaze
Room, and each has a maximum capacity for 50 participants. Attendance
for workshop B requires that a prerequisite be met; namely, prior
attendance at the Basic SACO Workshop on proposing headings or
experience in submitting subject proposals is mandatory.

The PCC Standing Committee on Training and Standing Committee on
Standards have created a joint Task Group on International Participation
in the PCC in an effort to develop a more diverse PCC membership, and to
increase internationalization of the cooperative cataloging enterprise.
Please refer to the new Joint Task Group's Web site
(http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/tgip.html) for a description of its
background, charges, and timeline.

The final report of the Standing Committee on Automation's Task
Group on Series Numbering has been posted to the PCC Web site (cf.:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/tgsernum02_rpt.pdf). This report has
been submitted to the PCC PoCo and is awaiting approval and
recommendations regarding next steps to help in implementation by system
vendors.
The Standing Committee on Automation has agreed to serve as the
lead organization for action item 4.1 of the LC Action Plan for
Bibliographic Control of Web Resources, which deals with journal
aggregators. Two previous SCA task groups have worked on aspects of
this issue. The 3rd SCA Task Group on Journals in Aggregator Databases
has been formed to carry out this assignment, and indeed has already
begun work.

Again I want to mention that the BIBCO Participant's Manual has
been completed and is available for downloading through the BIBCO Home
Page in .pdf format (cf. http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/bibco.html); it
will also be available in the December 2002 update to Cataloger's
Desktop.

Remember to periodically check the PCC calendar
(http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/calendar.html) which is comprehensive
in the listing of important upcoming PCC events, including those to be
held at ALA Midwinter in Philadelphia. Prepare to refresh your
bookmarked pages to ensure that the most up-to-date information has been
included in your display. And don't neglect to check the newest
comprehensive list of SACO Web resources, which is continually updated
and maintained. And as always, please let me know directly of any
changes to information for contacting you and your institution.
