Possible Contract Archivist Position-History of Medicine Division, National Library of Medicine
The National Library of Medicine's History of Medicine Division, located in Bethesda, Maryland, a Washington suburb, announces the possibility of a contract archivist position. The primary duties will be processing a variety of personal paper and professional association collections.
The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with salary commensurate with experience. The position provides no benefits.
Background:
The National Library of Medicine (NLM), one of the three national libraries in the United States, is the world's largest research library in a single scientific and professional field. NLM's primary mission, as mandated by the Congress, is service to the health professions. To support this mission, the Library comprehensively collects materials in biomedical subjects. The NLM holdings include more than 5 million items in over 70 languages from virtually every country in the world.
The NLM's History of Medicine Division (HMD) maintains a pre-eminent collection of the world's published medical literature, including books, journal volumes, pamphlets, and theses, printed from the 15th through the early 20th century; manuscripts ranging in date from the 11th century to the present; fine prints, and other graphic materials from the 15th century to the present; and historical audiovisuals up through 1970. The collection consists of more than 600,000 printed works, 6,000 linear feet of modern manuscripts, 4,000 historical audiovisuals, and 60,000 historical prints and photographs.
Primary Duties:
The archivist will provide professional archival services with the high degree of expertise required for processing unique archival materials. Activities will primarily consist of a full-range of item-level and series-level processing: arrangement and description involving appraisal and development of appropriate organizational series, re-housing materials into proper archival enclosures, removal of corrosive fasteners, and performing needed preservation actions. The archivist will also create EAD encoded finding aids with various levels of detail describing each collection's physical and intellectual contents.
The archivist will be part of the Archives and Modern Manuscripts team within HMD's Non-Books Program. Participation in all administrative aspects and training opportunities within HMD and NLM is highly encouraged.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant should possess an advanced degree in an appropriate field, and have previous experience working in an archival repository as a collection processor. Experience with word processing software, spreadsheets and databases is desirable.
