Can anyone help please with a problem arising from converting a batch of
UKMARC records into MARC21?
We have collections of material including family papers etc. which have
been indexed as 600s using the family name with an additional location
or title of nobility recorded in the UKMARC $f subfield used for additions.
This allows the qualification of a family name in a way useful when
dealing with multiple instances of a common surname - "Howard $l Family
$f of Naworth Castle, Cumberland", or the addition of the family title -
"Grey $l Family $f Earls Grey of Howick" (per UKMARC).
There no longer seems to be a way of providing additions to family names
in MARC21 in this way. Have these simply been discarded, and if so, is
there very much point in continuing to index by family name? How useful
is "Smith family" as an index term given the number of (probably
unrelated) Smiths there are in the world?
I have been unable to find any guidelines on this and would be grateful
for any pointers
