If I may add a couple of resources to the ones Colleen mentioned:
SF Site News: http://www.sfsite.com/columns/news01.htm (the one dealing
with Sheffield's death is at
http://www.sfsite.com/columns/news0211.htm). In a couple of weeks,
they'll be running my annual In Memoriam column which lists more the 150
people related to the SF field who we lost in 2002.
For specific information on people who have died, I'd recommend Laurie
Mann's Dead People Server at http://www.dpsinfo.com/dps/index.html#top.
