DUTIES:
The position requires an archivist knowledgeable about current web
technologies as well as archival arrangement and description. The Assistant
Archivist is responsible for participating in all aspects of electronic
information used within the Center, including XML-EAD, HTML, PDF, MARC, and
electronic archival records. This position will contribute to the
arrangement and description of archival records and manuscripts, as well as
to documentation research projects. Duties include maintaining the Library's
integrated library system (epixtech Horizon), the Physics History Finding
Aids web site (http://www.aip.org/history/ead/), and various other automated
systems. This Niels Bohr Library in the Center for History of Physics is
located in AIP's College Park headquarters location.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required -- Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited
program or a Masters degree in history, plus archival course work. Excellent
problem solving skills in an electronic environment with great attention to
detail. Experience creating standards-compliant web documents in HTML and
other languages. Knowledge of current archival descriptive standards. Must
be able to lift 40 lb. boxes. Desired -- Experience with AACR2 and/or
creating ISAD(G)-compliant finding aids. Experience in administering an
integrated library system. Prior experience with reference a plus. Knowledge
of Unix, Linux, and Windows 2000 environments and server software for
sharing web documents. Knowledge of a programming scripting language such as
Perl, Java, Python, C++, or PHP. Subject knowledge in the history of science
not required.
