.
Thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with Russell and Blish and Simmons
but not O'Leary or Card, and I have also read some Dick. Can you
supply in specific titles by Dick? Also, are PERPETUAL LIGHT and
AFTERLIVES anthologies, and, if so, who are the editors? Thanks.
The titles by Dick are _Clans of the Alphane Moon, Valis, Divine Invasion,
Radio Free Albemueth and The Galactic Pot Healer. Dick is a something of a
Gnostic but he writes from a genuine conversion experience. You might want
to examine the some of his non-fiction essays on various theological and
religious topics. If you find them compelling go on and take a look at his
'Exegesis' where he details his personal divine encounters.
The editor of the anthologies are Card for Cruel Miracles, Pamela Sargent
and Ian Watson for Afterlives and Alan Ryan for Perpetual Light.
I know I have more academic titles, but they're at work. When I get back to
Uni I'll scour the shelves.
Here's what my search at home turned up....
The Extraterrestrial Life Debate by Michael J. Crowe. If your friend
doesn't have this one it's a must and comes close to being the definitive
text on the topic.
How to Live Forever: Science Fiction and Philosophy by Stephen R. L. Clark.
Clark is the chair of the philosophy dept at Liverpool and a Christian to
boot.
There are a couple of Catholic Theologians who've written on the topic, I
think I saw their stuff on Metanexus. You should join or browse the
Metanexus listserv http://www.metanexus.net. Metanexus hosts a variety of
lists. One in particular deals deals with science and theology.
