A couple of years ago my media colleague Pat Adams-Caskie and I prepared
a teaching unit called "'Picturing' America at the Turn of the Twentieth
Century" for Learn NC <www.learnnc.org>. There are several lessons in
the unit that draw on visual collections from AM (advertising,
stereoscopic views, baseball cards, etc.). One option ties images to
literature, and we chose especially these works: Sinclair's "The
Jungle," Garland's "Under the Lion's Paw," and Gilman's "The Yellow
Wallpaper." The lesson is posted at the site and is freely accessible.
