I am trying to use EAD markup for the first time using the EAD Cookbook
and am using XMetaL 2.0 to process a new finding aid, but have
encountered a problem.
I downloaded the latest ead.dtd (Version 2002) from the Library of
Congress EAD web site then downloaded all of the files specified in the
XMetaL section of the Authoring Tools made available on the web site and
am trying to use eadcbs2.xsl as a style sheet. However I am encountering
a problem when creating the XML document. My process is to open
eadcorporate.xml from the Template folder of XMetaL then apply the
ead.dtd from the Rules folder to create an XML document.
When I do this, I receive this error message before entering any data:
Bad Markup Declaration. Expected a comment or marked section start.
The error refers to the term, ead in the !DOCTYPE statement.
The file portion follows:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE ead PUBLIC "-//Society of American Archivists//DTD ead.dtd
(Encoded Archival Description (EAD) Version 1.0)//EN" "ead.dtd">
I have also tried replacing the DOCTYPE statement with a direct path to
the dtd with:
<!DOCTYPE ead SYSTEM "c:\\Files\Program Files\SoftQuad\XMetaL
2\Rules\ead.dtd">
Any suggestions on what is wrong with this process?
