Brown Bag Event: Creating Taxonomies:How to Use Metrics to Show Progress

Information portals rely on good taxonomies for information accessibility and user satisfaction. Experience dictates that a good taxonomy should be intuitive, compelling and useful ¯ but how best to accomplish this goal? This brown bag session will look at a practical methodology for developing a good taxonomy, including:
* a Quality Plan framework as the backbone of your portal initiatives
* key characteristics of a good taxonomy
* tactics for ensuring that a taxonomy is easy to develop, validate and maintain
* tips for increasing information value, accuracy and completeness of taxonomy
The featured speaker, Dr. Claude Vogel, is the chief scientist for Convera and the founder and former Chief Technology Officer of Semio Corporation. He is an associate professor of Computational Semiotics at the University of Montreal and the University of Albuquerque, and a French Association for Artificial Intelligence Member of Honour. Dr. Vogel engages in ongoing research and among his published works are nine books on the subjects of software engineering, cognitive design, social organizations, and semiotics.
