I sent out a message about unsubscribing from the EAD list recently, but
it can't hurt to repeat the instructions for those who may want to
unsubscribe now.
To unsubscribe from the EAD list, you must send an email message to the
"LISTSERV" software address:
[log in to unmask]
LISTSERV is a program that manages electronic lists. To subscribe and
unsubscribe to a list you have to communicate with this software, not
a particular list. This is what is confusing about managing your
subscription to an electronic list. You generally have to communicate
with an address you rarely use. YOU CANNOT UNSUBSCRIBE BY SENDING A
MESSAGE TO THE LIST ADDRESS. Don't forget this. Sending a message to
the list address ([log in to unmask]) will do nothing except let everyone see
that you want to unsubscribe and don't know how.
The message that you send to the listserv address
([log in to unmask]) only needs to have one line of text in the body of the
message. The text should read
unsubscribe ead "[your name]"
That's all there is to it. The software doesn't even care much about how
you spell your name. The important part is the email address that the
software sees in the "From:" line of your message. That email address
must match the email address you used when you originally subscribed. If
your mail server address has changed, and you are now receiving EAD
posting through an alias, you will NOT be able to unsubscribe by simply
sending a message to the listserv address. In this case, you will need to
send me an email asking me to unsubscribe you manually. It is very
helpful if you can tell me what your email address was when you originally
subscribed. I will have to look for your subscription address and process
a deletion of that subscription manually. If all you know is your name,
that is sometimes enough for me to find your old email address.
I hope these instructions help you to unsubscribe when you need to.
If you think your email server is going to undergo a change that affects
your address, we recommend you unsubscribe from all lists before the
change, and then resubscribe from the new address.
Please print out this message and save it for future reference!
