Suzanne, I'm not sure I understand the structure of your data, so I don't
understand the nesting here. Are these what we call "multi-volume
monographs" in the library trade? I wasn't thinking that volume and number
would be nested at all -- they would be sequenced, with volume being
enumeration level 1 (if you care about that), number being enumeration
level 2, etc. This is, admittedly, a bit of a cop-out, but it helps out
those cases when a true hierarchy isn't evident. As for the parts in
titles, I'm not sure we went that far.

If this is archival material, then the MARC record is not ideal for these
materials, which is why archivists tend to move over to EAD, a much more
complex record with all of the detail that they need.
