I've written a short Perl CGI script called Gnosis for searching many EAD files which supports date range searching and specific-date searching (for both "normal" dates and many common natural-language expressions of dates). The source can be downloaded at http://ecphrasis.port5.com/gnosis.zip. At this point the program itself is pretty rough (and relies on a third-party XSLT processor to work) but you may be able to glean something from my date-searching code.
