I don't think it has any direct relevance to the multiple databases/single
search question.
It's a content provider issue that they want to brand their data for
whatever reason, so it comes from the same arena, but is a parallel
requirement.

I don't see that this is a very strong implication. Sure it's possible,
but it's not something that a server would have to implement, even if the
same record appeared in multiple databases just to provide a single access
point to multiple databases.
