Dear colleagues,
The results of the ballots concerning Upper and Lower Sorbian are almost
clear. Just one item remains: The indigenous name of Lower Sorbian. For that
reason I circulate this to a larger list to get as much expert input as
possible.
The ballot forms are included below for your information.
What is clear is the following:
Upper Sorbian = hsb : Included in the alpha-3 table, but not in the alpha-2
table.
Lower Sorbian = dsb : Included in the alpha-3 table, but not in the alpha-2
table.
The following comments have been received regarding the indigenous name of
Lower Sorbian:
EM: The newest and best dictionary of Lower Sorbian (Manfred Starosta:
Dolnoserbsko-nimski slownik) does not know the word "dolnoserbscina". I
would use the word dolnoserbska rec (e with caron). They are not using the
word: dolnoserbsina themselves. Instead they use the form "(dolno)serbska
rec".
MS: I refer to the comments made by EM.
Please comment on the indigenous name of Lower Sorbian only. All other
issues relating to Sorbian are finalized (for now).
Best regards,
Håvard Hjulstad

Background and additional information:
This is based on a proposal that was submitted on 2003-05-07 and circulated
to the JAC for comments on 2003-05-17. Some comments have been submitted.
Arguments have been presented against including the item in the alpha-2
table, and indeed no conclusive evidence has been provided in favour of the
inclusion. The question is still retained on the ballot form, since there is
no clear consensus not to include it from the submitted comments.
Some of the comments have been relating to the issue of retaining "wen" as a
group identifier for Sorbian (or as a rest group identifier for "other
Sorbian languages"). Evidence has been presented in favour of retaining the
group identifier, and no proposal will be made to deprecate it.
The proposed alpha-3 identifier is different from the Ethnologue identifier
("WEN"), which is not available.
