My last word on the issue...

To me, Xpath just seems too powerful a hammer for this nut. I'm still
not convinced that there would be that many schemas in practice - for a
book, for example we would need Mods, book-fulltext, chapter-fulltext,
section-fulltext, sentence-fulltext (and that may be too long a list). 

There definitely wouldn't be anywhere near an uncountable number though.
I suspect that the number of schemas would be finite, and even if
infinite, I'm pretty sure it would be a countable infinity ;-)
