Currently (in 1.0) there isn't an official way to return an explain
diagnostic. Ooops! =)
We didn't think it was an oversight large enough to warrant an errata to
1.0, but will be fixed in 1.1 which will hopefully be discussed shortly
and finalised by November.
The current thinking is to make the explain response a record as this also
allows XML vs string representation, explicit schema and metadata (TBD for
1.1) fields.
Hope that at least encourages that you're not missing something in 1.0,
even if it's not immediately helpful on how to implement it for 1.1
