Is the aim just to get a general image of the front cover design, or do
you need to be able to read the notes on the back too?
The first LP I picked up (a 1958 jazz album) has 90 lines of text in 90%
of its height - ie 100 lines in 12 inches. You would need at least 20
pixels to be able to read the text - an OCR program would like more.
So the minimum resolution needed for reading the sleeve notes is
2000x2000 pixels. As the camera image is rectangular, it would need to
be 2000x3000 pixels, which is 6 megapixels. To get a good image for OCR,
more would be desirable.
OTOH if you only want the general look of the front, much less will do.
Any color print film in 35mm will easily resolve the detail required,
assuming focus is accurate and flash is used for lighting to avoid
camera movement. Digital cameras are not yet up to 35mm resolution.
