Gordon,
It is pretty easy, you just use the DAO tag, into which you enter a URL to
the image you want to link to of. Of course, your stylesheet needs to
support it, but that is another matter, although not very difficult either
if your stylesheet is easy to edit. There is a finding aid with
numberous DAO's here:

I use the role attribute to tell what kind of digital file is being linked
through, then a series of if's in the stylesheet to tailor the way the
link looks in the HTML. I.e. if it is a photo i say "view photo" or if an
audio clip "listen to clip" etc.
