George H. Smith wrote a book titled The Second War of the Worlds published by
DAW.  A parallel Earth is invaded by the martians who have immunized
themselves this time, but there are other scientific differences between that world
and the original Earth.  He also borrows a couple victorian characters to help
out...a Mr. H. and Dr. W.
