Hello! I think this is the first time I've posted to this list. I've
searched the archives, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.
At the University of Maryland, we are nearing the end of figuring out
how encode our finding aids. We've run into one sticky problem.
Several of our finding aids have appendices attached to them that
contain valuable information. Sometimes the appendices are really just
"Related Materials" in more detail, sometimes they're family trees,
lists of related publications, etc.
We've decided that we are going to try as much as possible to return
these appendices to their proper homes, and in some cases, tags such as
<separatedmaterial> or <bibliography> will help us. Most of the
information will go into the <relatedmaterial> tag, but we want to
figure out the best way to tag this information for display purposes,
and also to tag it in such a way that we could choose not to display
that one portion, if we didn't want to. I guess the best way to ask is
by example.
In our paper finding aid, we have some free text in the
<relatedmaterials> section about publications and archival collections
in our holdings that relate to the collection. Our first appendix is a
detailed list of individual photographs in our photograph collection
relating to the collection.
I have something like this:
<relatedmaterial><head>Related Material</head>
<p><i>The History of Caroline County</i> (1971 Maryland Reference
F187.C2H67) contains a history of the town of Ridgely and a brief entry
on the "state farm." Albert White's obituary appears in the Caroline
<i>Sun</i> on July 17, 1943, and the University of Maryland's <i>Alumni
News</i> mentions the death of Albert White on page three of the October
1943 issue....etc.
If I want to include this List of Photographs in the <relatedmaterial>
tag, is there a simple way to do so, and yet, have it be somewhat
separate, in case we ever don't want to display that portion? The
appendix looks something like this now in the print version:

List of Related Photographs
Photograph Vertical File-University of Maryland
Agricultural Experiment Station (all of the images below were taken in
Ridgely, Maryland)
#6288 unidentified buildings on the M.A.E.S. farm, n.d.
#6289 spring plowing at the M.A.E.S. farm. Tenant house on left of
...
Photograph Vertical File-Portraits
White, Charles E., [n.d.]
White, Kate, [n.d.]
... etc.
So, if anyone has an experience dealing with these types of things, or
has very elaborate <relatedmaterial> sections, I would love some
suggestions on an efficient way to handle this.
