jEdit is free and cross-platform; you can download it from
http://www.jedit.org/. I've used it with TEI and it was fine, so I
think it should work with EAD as well. To use it with XML you should
be sure to download the following plugins:
ErrorList
SideKick
XML
XSLT
XmlIndenter
Note also that at the moment you should use Java 1.3.1 rather than
Java 1.4 (but this may change).
I liked it quite a bit; we used it in a hands-on TEI training session
and it was easy to use but also functional.
