Subject: Print and Braille Labels System
Index Term: Windows verison 3.1 available to download
The Print and Braille Labels System for Windows , version 3.1, is now available
for download and use by network libraries. This system, which is an update of the
original DOS version, allows libraries to produce print and braille labels for locally
duplicated cassettes and for their mailing containers. It incorporates a braille translation
module that allows users to easily create grade 2 (contracted) braille versions of book
titles.
The software is available to network libraries at no charge from the NLS Network
Library Services website. It must not be shared outside the network because of licensing
restrictions on the braille translation module.
On the main menu of the Network Library Services site, choose "Selected Reports and
Documents from NLS." From this menu, choose "Print and Braille Labels Installation
Package." There are five files in the folder shown. Two of them contain the user's manual
(in pdf and text format), which provides information about the system, the supplies and
equipment needed (and their sources), and installation instructions. Download the manual
and follow the instructions in section II for downloading and installing the software.
Libraries wishing to use the system must acquire the equipment needed. Braille Blazers
(the embosser specified for this system) used with the DOS system will work with the new
version.
The necessary print and braille stock is available from commercial sources (listed in the
user's manual) and the Multistate Centers (MSCs). Three types of label stock are
used with the system. The first, LA005 LABEL: CASSETTE TAPE - BLANK FOR PRINT,
has been supplied by the MSCs for some time, and will continue to be
available in boxes of 1,000 labels. The other two types are new MSC stock items. They
are supplied in quantities of 600 labels per pack. They are:
LA009 LABEL: CASSETTE CONTAINER: SIDE AND END - BLANK FOR PRINT
LA010 LABEL: CASSETTE TAPE - BLANK FOR BRAILLE OVERLAY
The MSCs will supply reasonable quantities of the new labels to libraries, within budgetary
limits. The distribution planned for the first year is 1,200 of each of the new label types for
each regional library. Depending on demand, additional labels may become available. If
you have needs beyond your initial order, please submit a second order. It will be filled or
back-ordered, as appropriate. For all items, please use Web-ordering from the MSCs.
Data Management, the developer of the system, will supply limited hotline support.
Call 1-800-577- 3237 and ask for P&B Labels support. If a support technician is not
available when you call, someone will return your call within twenty-four hours.
