I second Rob's suggestion to check out ZOOM.
It's fairly easy these days to locate a Z39.50 client -- many are
freely available. Investigate the free and commercial Z39.50
software listed on our Website:
Another free client, not yet listed on our software page, is MarcEdit
that uses Index Data's YAZ client (http://www.indexdata.dk/yaz/)
to provide access to MARC records.
Records are used for a variety of purposes -- whenever a bibliographic
description is required -- for example, in bibliographies, for use
within library processing or reference.
With regard to SRW/SRU and LC, it is our desire to put a SRW/SRU
to Z39.50 gateway in front of our production databases. I can't
provide you with an implementation date at this time, but we're
hoping this will happen in the not-all-that-distant future. We'll
announce the gateway on this list when it's ready for prime time,
and give proper credit to all who made that desire and reality.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
