Please note the upcoming event to be presented in the Performing Arts
Reading Room (LM 113) in the Madison Building at the Library of
Congres:

 STOKOWSKI: THE NBC YEARS

The inaugural talk for 2004 will feature Al Schlachtmeyer discussing
his recent finds of rare Leopold Stokowski broadcast performances from
the NBC Radio collection at the Library of Congress. From late 1941
until early 1944, Leopold Stokowski replaced Arturo Toscanini as the
dominant leader of the NBC Symphony. The Stokowski years at NBC were
exciting and distinctive. Fresh from his starring role in Walt
Disney's "Fantasia," the younger British-born conductor
introduced new repertoire and championed contemporary music. His
indulgent, expressive style formed a fascinating contrast to that of his
more rigid predecessor. Featured in excellent sound will be extended
excerpts from unfamiliar as well as previously unknown Stokowski/NBC
recordings.
