Planning for the 2004 National Conference of Librarians
Serving Blind and Physically Handicapped Individuals is nearing
completion. As in 2002 we have involved the Digital
Long-Term Planning Group in our prearrangement efforts.
The conference will convene in Rapid City, South Dakota, at
1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday
Inn. It will conclude at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 6. Based
on survey responses generated from Network Bulletin 03-12 and
input from the regional conferences in 2003, a one-day
pre-conference workshop, "Doing More with Less," will be held
from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004.

March 5, 2004. Do not use the U.S. Postal Service.
Room rates are $55 per day single or double occupancy, plus
state and local taxes (currently 7.84 percent) in effect at the
time of check-in. Check-in time is 4:00 p.m., check-out time is
noon. Reservations are held until 6:00 p.m. unless guaranteed
with a credit card. Please call (605) 348-4000 to make
reservations directly with the hotel as soon as possible and no
later than March 30, 2004.
When you register, please let the hotel know you are attending
the National Conference of Librarians Serving Blind and
Physically Handicapped Individuals. The hotel will continue to
accept reservations on a space-available basis after March 30,
but will not guarantee conference rates.
Draft Agenda
The Sunday afternoon opening session, May 2, will feature
presentations on developments at NLS followed by regional
conference meetings, followed by the Herman H.B. Meyer
Memorial Literary Club and Declamatory Society reception.
Monday, May 3, will begin with the conference's keynote
addresses. The remainder of the day will focus on national
outreach initiatives, and at the Crazy Horse Monument
site, programming by and about Native Americans. The evening
will include a reception at Mount Rushmore.
Tuesday morning, May 4, events will include presentations
on digital efforts in Europe and the United States, and a new
project initiated by the Mid-Illinois subregional library.
There will also be discussion on reader/circulation statistical
matters, braille conservation, and an NLS user based program
assessment. During the afternoon there will be presentations
on shelving strategies. Buses will then depart for a tour
of Spearfish Canyon, a reception at the Spearfish Lodge, and
an optional tour of Deadwood.
The National Automation Conference will be held on
Wednesday, May 5. As usual it will include updates on various
circulation systems used in the network, user-group
meetings, discussions of automation potpourri, and updates on NLS
automation initiatives. In the afternoon there will be breakout
sessions on the Low Complexity Mastering System, regional
library/radio reading services relationships, and understanding
technology.
The conference will conclude on Thursday, May 6, at noon
following presentations and discussions on web magazines,
use of commercial books, the recently completed user survey,
and the Player System Design RFP.
An optional tour to the South Dakota Badlands will be
available on Thursday afternoon. Buses will return to the hotel
at 8:00 p.m.
A detailed agenda will be distributed in March. Please make
your plans to attend now. Your participation will help make
the 2004 conference a success.
