> Any early favorites for Hugo Nominees this year?
I can't speak to this year's Hugos, since I have
some things that are eligible and it would be
inappropriate -- but let me say that just narrowing
down the novels for the Retro Hugos is going to be
fascinating.
Consider the novels that are eligible:
THE SPACE MERCHANTS by Fred Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth
FARENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury
THE CAVES OF STEEL by Isaac Asimov
MISSION OF GRAVITY by Hal Clement
CHILDHOOD'S END by Arthur C. Clarke
MORE THAN HUMAN by Ted Sturgeon
STARMAN JONES by Robert A. Heinlein
AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT by Arthur C. Clarke
In the shorter areas, you've got "A Case of Conscience",
"The Nine Billion Names of God", and a ton of others.
Bob Sheckley and Phil Dick, who each had about 30
works of short fiction published in 1953, could
easily fill up all the short fiction categories just
between the two of them.
I was discussing the list with Bob Silverberg
last week. Our conclusion: science fiction should
have closed up shop and gone home on December 31, 1953.
