Hi Lara -
I haven't had a chance yet to try the solutions that were posted. We do
have our files saved to the network and I know at least one of our
students sometimes saves what she's working on to the desktop until
she's completed it, so it's possible that is where she's experiencing
the problem. (That is, XMetaL creates a default .css file when it
doesn't find one.) But I will be sure to let you know what we figure
out!
And for those of you who haven't heard, XMetaL has been sold once again:

Subject: XMetaL 4.0 problem
A week or so ago, someone posted a request for advice on a problem with
XMetaL 4.0 "losing" the formatting of templates (see below). Since we
are considering purchasing copies of XMetaL 4.0 here at the University
of Minnesota, I'm extremely interested to know if the problem was
solved. Someone posted a suggested that it may be due to problems with
using XMetaL over a network. Was that source of the problem or was it
something else?

Has anybody else had problems using XMetaL 4.0? We'd been working
happily along with 3.0 and needed another copy but by that time SoftQuad
had sold XMetaL to Corel and we had to purchase their 4.0 version. This
was last spring and we have continued to struggle along with it. The
most frustrating problem: for reasons we have not yet figured out,
documents and sometimes, our template, will lose all of it's formatting
(not as we're actually working on it, but when we've saved the document
and come back to it later). The colored tags disappear and they all run
together with no spacing. Playing with the word wrap does not help and
the help file is of absolutely NO assistance - it is the help file from
3.0 and the menus they tell you to go to do not even exist in 4.0! After
playing around and moving the files to the desktop we are sometimes able
to restore the formatting, but as far as we can tell there is no rhyme
or reason to when it will work and when it won't.
